October is National Financial Planning Month

By Patrick Boley LL.M. | Estate Planning, Trust & Probate

October is National Financial Planning Month and we at Eckberg Lammers commend to all our clients the benefits of planning and the virtues of financial planners.

As a writer once said, “a goal without a plan is just a wish.” Many of your most important goals in life – getting married, having children, saving for college, changing jobs, purchasing a home, retirement – all have financial components. In estate planning, we frequently see how the end of life itself (usually not a goal), can bring financial consequences and opportunities for generations of family members and even whole communities.

A good financial planner goes far beyond recommending a good stock or a mutual fund. They become partners with you, help identify your important goals and develop a strategy to reach them. Planners provide knowledge on a range of subjects such as investments, taxes, insurance, real estate, medical and education finance, charitable giving, estate planning, and family relations.

We encourage our clients to connect with financial planners because we understand the value of the service they provide. And from clients already working with a planner we hear a lot of positive remarks on the help they’ve received. It’s a unique professional relationship, one that often spans several years: a person trained in strategic thinking gets to know you and stays in periodic contact to discuss how to help you succeed.

As estate planners we frequently work in concert with financial planners to develop strategies for our clients. Some of the many advantages they provide in the estate planning process include:

  • Long-standing knowledge of clients, their concerns and their financial picture that can provide important background and nuance to the development of a successful estate plan.
  • Knowledge and ready access to a range of financial products – such as life insurance – that can play a critical role in completing an estate plan. And,
  • Familiarity with clients’ financial accounts and the companies managing the accounts, which can facilitate beneficiary designations and, later, administration of a trust or estate.

One of the most rewarding aspects of estate planning is the opportunity we have to work with a lot of wonderful people. Along with our clients, we enjoy interacting with financial planners. Not only are they important teammates in successful estate planning, they are thoughtful, likable people who regularly show why they’ve earned such a trusted place in the lives of their clients.
