Family Law: What Can I Expect From An Initial Consultation?

By Allison Fredrickson | Family & Divorce Law

The goal of an initial consult is to see if you and the attorney make a good fit and to provide a clear, comfortable, and competent understanding of the process in relation to your specific matter. To help prepare you for the initial meeting we recommend downloading our Intake Questionnaire as a guide and/or write down specific questions ahead of time. An initial consult will typically involve the following:

  1. Discuss all major issues relating to your matter. Such as: property, retirement, children, investment funds, etc.
  2. Answer any immediate questions you may have regarding your specific situation.
  3. Provide an overview of the divorce process in Minnesota/Wisconsin or discuss alternate options if you and your spouse have already worked out an arrangement.
  4. Discuss any potential hurdles that may be present in your case.
  5. Create a clear plan on next steps to move forward and financial arrangements.

Family matters are always a highly emotional proceeding, so it is our goal to provide the most comfortable experience to our clients. We are able to accommodate remote meetings by telephone or video chat at your convenience. To learn more about our family law attorney, Allison Fredrickson or to book an appointment email us at
